Migraine has three components - severe headache, nausea and sickness, and an increasing discomfort with light and sound. An attack typically begins with a feeling of general illness and irritability. This is known as an aura, and it can last for between 10 minutes and a half hour before a severe headache starts. About one-third of migraine sufferers experience auras which are thought to be caused by a wave of increased activity of brain cells. The visual disturbances move across the field of vision and there may also be a sensation of tingling or numbness that is usually one-sided. A migraine sufferer will want to be in a quiet, dark room and sleep during the headache phase of the attack. The throbbing pain usually occurs over the front part of the head, but may also affect the back. It often improves after vomiting.
There is often a family history of migraine, suggesting a genetic element to the condition. It is more common among women than men, with about 20 per cent of women compared with 6 per cent of men experiencing migraine in their lifetime. Migraine attacks in women may be affected by their periods. Other trigger factors include some foods - particularly the four things: chocolate, cheese, caffeine and citrus - and stress. Attacks caused by stress tend to occur after, rather than during, the stressful event. Another factor may be changes in sleep pattern such as shift work or sleeping longer at the weekend.
